Simulations of Parametric Response of Bridge Stay Cables

چکیده
In this paper, nonlinear implicit finite element analyses are used to explore parametric excitation of a bridge stay cable resulting from cyclic motion of the deck. “Parametric excitation” is excitation of a cable mode with deck motion at near twice the frequency of the excited mode. Third-mode parametric frequency response curves are consistently predicted when the finite element mesh is sufficiently small. With low damping, large-amplitude parametric response develops quickly. Reaction moments at the deck and tower increase by a factor of two when large-amplitude motion ensues from parametric excitation.

Static and Dynamic Characteristics of a Long-Span Cable-Stayed Bridge with CFRP Cables
In this study, the scope of CFRP cables in cable-stayed bridges is studied by establishing a numerical model of a 1400-m span of the same. The mechanical properties and characteristics of CFRP stay cables and of a cable-stayed bridge with CFRP cables are here subjected to comprehensive analysis. The anomalies in the damping properties of free vibration, nonlinear parametric vibration and wind f...
متن کاملFatigue failure analysis of stay cables with initial defects: Ewijk bridge case study
A failure assessment method of stay cables containing fractured wires is presented through an example of an existing bridge. The wires constituting the stay cables of the bridge contained many initial defects that were formed during the rolling process of these wires. Despite moderate loading, fatigue cracks started to grow from these defects, increasing their size, and finally resulting in fra...
متن کاملInvestigation on Deck-Stay Interaction of Symmetric Harp Cable-Stayed Bridge
This paper provides a variety of viewpoints to illustrate the mechanism of the deck-stay interaction with the appropriate initial shapes of cable-stayed bridges, which is validated by a symmetrical structure. Based on the smooth and convergent bridge shapes obtained by the initial shape analysis, the one-element cable system (OECS) and multi-element cable system (MECS) models of the symmetric h...
متن کاملA Superelastic Retrofitting Method for Mitigating the Effects of Seismic Excitations on Irregular Bridges
Irregularities in bridge pier stiffness concentrate the ductility demand on short piers; while not operating on the longer and more flexible ones. The existence of non-uniform, ductility demand distribution in bridges significantly influences seismic response. As such, this paper proposes a new approach for balancing the ductility demand in irregular bridges by utilizing shape memory alloys (SM...

Nagisa Bridge, a single span footbridge, was recently completed in Aomori prefecture, Japan. The structure of this bridge is a hybrid structure of cable-stayed prestressed concrete bridge and steel suspension bridge. It is the first application as this structure type of bridge in the world. Concrete girders near pylons are supported by stay cables. Steel girders are supported by suspension cabl...
